Questions Every Pediatric SLP Wants Parents/Caregivers to Ask

By: Emily Messer, CCC-SLP

Speech therapy can feel like a big step for both parents and kids, especially when it’s something new. As a pediatric speech-language pathologist (SLP), I’m here to tell you that your involvement and curiosity can make a world of difference in your child’s therapy journey. Asking the right questions helps you stay informed and engaged in your child’s progress. Here are a few important questions every SLP would love for you to ask—so you can feel confident and empowered every step of the way!

  1. What are the specific goals for my child in therapy?
It’s essential to understand the goals your child is working toward, both short-term and long-term. Knowing these goals gives you a clear picture of what progress looks like, so you can celebrate even the small wins along the way. It also helps you track improvements and better understand what your child is learning.
  2. How can I support my child’s progress at home?
Therapy doesn’t stop when you leave the office. Your involvement at home is crucial. Ask your SLP for tips, activities, or strategies that you can implement during every day routines to reinforce the skills your child is practicing. It could be as simple as turning everyday activities into learning moments.
  3. What signs should I be watching for to track progress?
As a parent, it’s helpful to know what milestones or improvements to expect as therapy progresses. While every child develops at their own pace, understanding what to look for can help you recognize when things are improving and when additional support might be needed.
  4. What should I do if I feel like my child is not progressing?
It’s natural for parents to worry if they don’t see immediate results. If you feel like your child isn’t making the progress you’d hoped for, it’s completely okay to ask your SLP for a review of their therapy plan or discuss any adjustments that might help. Your input is vital, and a good SLP will work with you to make sure your child is getting the best possible support.
  5. How can we make therapy fun and engaging for my child?
Therapy should feel like a positive experience for your child! Ask your SLP about playful techniques, games, or activities that can keep your child engaged and excited about therapy. When learning feels like fun, kids are more likely to be motivated and invested in their progress.
  6. Are there any resources (books, apps, etc.) you recommend?
Speech therapy tools and resources can extend beyond the therapy room. Whether it’s a book, app, or activity that aligns with your child’s goals, asking for recommendations can give you valuable resources to reinforce learning at home.

By asking these questions, you’re not only staying informed but also showing your child that you’re invested in their success. You and your child’s SLP are a team, and together, you can help your child thrive. Remember, no question is too small—your curiosity and involvement are key to making the most of this important journey!
