IEP Meetings: Questions to Ask Your School SLP

Questions to Ask Your School SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist)

By: Maggie Wade, CCC-SLP

As a former school-based Speech-Language Pathologist, I know how busy the school day can be-and how little time there sometimes is to talk directly with parents. But I loved when families came to meetings with questions and ideas. Your voice matters! Whether you’re attending your first IEP meeting or your fifth, it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed. Meetings often include many professionals and lots of information. Asking questions helps everyone work together and ensures your child gets the best support possible.

What is and IEP Meeting?

An Individualized Education Program/Plan (IEP meeting happens at least once a year. It’s a time to review your child’s progress, set new goals for the upcoming year, and adjust services as needed. IEP meetings should be a collaborative process between you (the family) and the school team. Your input is valuable and welcomed!

Great Questions to Ask Your SLP

  • Use these questions to guide your conversation and get the clarity you deserve.
  • What helped my child make progress this year?
  • What challenges or barriers impacted my child’s progress?
  • Did my child meet the goals we set last year?
  • Is my child using their communication skills outside of the speech room?
  • How do you collect and track progress data?
  • Why did you choose these specific goals for my child?
  • Were there other goals you considered?
  • Do you think we should increase, decrease, or maintain current services?
  • Is my child on track to be dismissed from speech services in the future?
  • Do you have any concerns outside of communication that we should discuss?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if you’re unsure of what to ask. SLPs want to hear from you. The more we know about your child from your perspective, the better we can support their growth and success. Your voice makes a difference!
