Tummy Time: Facts & Tips for Success!

Why is tummy time important for my baby?

  • Strengthens baby’s back, neck and shoulder muscles – this helps baby as they learn to roll, sit and crawl
  • Helps maintain a round head shape and avoid conditions like torticollis and plagiocephaly

When should my baby start tummy time?

  • As soon as they come home from the hospital!

Tips & Tricks for Success:

  • Tummy time should be an activity incorporated into your child’s day while they are awake and supervised
  • Start slowly – place your baby on their belly for 1-2 minutes at a time, 4 to 5 times per day
  • Increase each tummy time session until you reach 10 minutes at a time, 4 to 5 times per day
  • During rest breaks, help the baby roll so they don’t feel stuck
  • Give baby something to look at – a mirror is a great distraction

Different Tummy Time positions to try:

  • Carrying him/her tummy side down against your arm and nestle them close to your body
  • Place baby on your chest or your tummy while laying down on your back so you are face to face
  • Place baby tummy down across your knees while sitting with a hand on baby’s back to keep them steady
