The Benefits of Parent Groups for Children with ADHD
When a child is diagnosed with ADHD, parents often find themselves navigating a new set of questions: What does this mean for my child’s learning? How do I best support them at home and at school? What strategies will really help?
Research shows that one of the most effective steps families can take is participating in a psychoeducational parent group. These groups provide both knowledge and practical skills, empowering parents to help their child succeed.
Why Parent Groups Work
Parent-focused interventions are considered a gold standard in ADHD treatment. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends parent training in behavior management as a first-line treatment for school-age children with ADHD.
Studies consistently demonstrate that parents who participate in structured ADHD-focused groups report:
- Reduced stress and greater confidence in handling challenges.
- Stronger parent-child relationships.
- Increased use of effective discipline and reinforcement strategies.
Children benefit, too. With consistent support at home, research shows they demonstrate:
- Better behavior regulation.
- Improved academic performance and homework completion.
- More positive social interactions.
What Parents Learn
Our ADHD Parenting Group is designed specifically for families of children ages 5–11 with an ADHD diagnosis. Through weekly virtual sessions, parents gain tools and strategies in the following areas:
- Understanding ADHD: What the diagnosis means and how it impacts behavior, learning, and daily life.
- Treatment Planning: Evidence-based approaches that support children both at home and at school.
- Parenting Strategies: Practical skills to create structure, consistency, and positive reinforcement.
- School Supports: Guidance on collaborating with educators to meet your child’s needs.
Why Elementary Years Are the Ideal Time
Elementary school is a formative period for children with ADHD. They are developing the building blocks for academic success, social relationships, and emotional regulation. Equipping parents with the right tools during this stage helps children build stronger foundations for middle school, high school, and beyond.
Parenting a child with ADHD can feel overwhelming at times, but you do not have to navigate it alone. By joining a psychoeducational parent group, you’ll gain practical, research-based strategies and connect with a community of families who share similar experiences.
