Road Trip Activities To Promote Speech and Language
By: Melinda Schatz, M.A., CCC-SLP
Road trips are a fantastic way to create lasting memories and also promote speech and language development. When you are traveling with kids, these fun activities can enhance communication skills and make the journey more enjoyable for everyone.
- Storytelling Time: Encourage everyone to create and share stories. One person can start the story and then the passengers can take turns adding to the story. This boosts vocabulary, sentence structure and imagination.
- I Spy: A classic game that encourages observation and descriptive language. It’s a great way to practice new words and concepts.
- Find the Sound: If your child struggles with a sound, this is perfect way to get some extra practice! Challenge him or her to find as many things as they can with the sound you name. This activity helps with sound awareness and articulation.
- Road Trip Bingo: Each child gets a card with different things you can find on the road. You can download a bingo card and give your child stickers to put on the items they find. Ask your child “What” and “where” questions as they find the objects. This helps with matching, vocabulary, comprehension and forming sentences.
- Singing Along: Sing along to favorite tunes. Whether it is a nursery rhyme like Wheels on the Bus or a Disney favorite, such as Let it Go, the whole family can participate! Music helps to improve sound awareness, memory and pronunciation.
Road trips are more than just a way to reach a destination; they’re opportunities to connect, learn and grow together. Happy Travels!
