Social Butterflies‚Ñ¢ groups include sensory processing skills

Two Social Butterflies Club‚Ñ¢ social skills clubs are offered this summer at our Pineville office.

BACK TO SCHOOL: August 10-13

The Club helps kids learn how to interact with peers while having fun with sensory and speech activities combined.   The kids in the group have a variety of diagnoses, such as expressive and/or receptive language problems, sensory processing difficulties, and fine motor deficits.  The goal is to teach the kids how to communicate with peers in a positive way.

The groups are formed based on each child‚Äôs communication skills, social ability and age.  Sessions are co-led by 1 Speech Therapist and 1 Occupational Therapist at the Pineville office.

From an occupational therapy perspective, it creates opportunities for kids to learn through unstructured and structured play, using many whole body movement and sensory experiences including:

  • circle time
  • craft time
  • obstacle courses with tunnels, textured walking stones, ramps and animal walks

These experiences give organizing feedback your a child to promote ability to attend to and participate in Club activities and interactions with leaders and other kids.

Our Courtney Stanley, OTR/L, has been part of these social skills groups for the last few years and is always pleased and amazed to see how quickly our social butterflies pick up on the routine of each day and begin to initiate conversations with peers, invite others to play with them, take turns, share, and participate in group activities.  She shares that to build up their confidence and watch them take the skills they learn into their classrooms and the community has been such a special reward.

The Club meets for four 1-hour sessions, Monday-Thursday. Kids can enroll and benefit from consecutive groups.

The cost is $200.00.  Payment is due at the time of registration.
