The team of 9 licensed occupational therapists at Child and Family Development offer evaluation and therapy services related to handwriting skills.  Our OTs have experience and training in the areas that are required for success including:

  • core strength
  • executive functioning
  • fine motor function
  • visual perception

Handwriting Without Tears¬Æ (HWT) is an award-winning and therapeutic curriculum that teaches writing skills to children of all abilities.  Kids move through the following programs to the next as skills grow:

  • pre-printing
  • printing
  • cursive
  • also available: keyboarding

HWT® was developed by an Occupational Therapist using child-friendly language, child development concepts, and fun teaching techniques. All of the HWT® techniques are developmentally based, which means that a child builds upon the skills he has mastered. It is a multisensory approach that incorporates:

  • posture
  • strength
  • grasp
  • coordination
  • perception
  • writing

The HWT¬Æ product line includes workbooks and teacher guides,as well as multisensory approach to handwriting.  It uses a variety of mediums such as wooden pieces, play doh, magnadoodles, chalk and chalkboard, and music to help children master handwriting skills.
