Chris Vrabel, Psy.D. is a full-time psychologist at Child and Family Development who specializes in working with preschool and school-aged children and their families.

Recently, an article by Mark Bertin, M.D.about “time out” caught his eye.  Dr. Vrabel particularly likes how it describes how to use this strategy effectively.

Dr. Bertin’s tips include:

  • Time-outs work best when they are part of a parenting style that focuses on affection and rewards

  •  Time out should be served in a boring environment

  • Use one warning only

  • Stick to a reasonable length for time outs

  •

But don’t just rely on a timer

  • Be consistent

  • Always follow through

  •

Make it known who is in charge
