Psychologists have always played a critical role in the evaluation process at Child and Family Development. The professionals in this discipline have increased the treatment options for children and their families. Psychologists serve as lead clinicians in the psychological-education evaluations that are a critical part of our diagnostic approach. The psychologist''''s role is to assess a child''''s cognitive and attention status as well as personality responses such as anxiety, depression, or anger.

In addition to evaluations, psychologists are involved in individual and group treatment. Individual options include psychotherapy, play therapy, and family counseling. Increasingly, we are offering group options that include social skills groups and parent support groups.

Experienced with a variety of learning and emotional problems, Dr. Ferguson specializes in assessing and treating young children using play therapy techniques to help build coping strategies in children often too young for traditional talking therapy. As well, some parents also desire consultation about school issues, requesting school observations and/or meetings with the school. The treatment modalities most often utilized to help the psychological adjustment of individuals would include cognitive-behavioral (problem solving) strategies, relaxation training, play therapy, behavior management, and supportive counseling. Dr. Ferguson holds a doctorate degree in clinical psychology (1989) from Wright State University’s School of Professional psychology with six years as a school psychologist after receiving her Master’s degree from Boston College and Bachelor’s degree from Miami University in Ohio.
