Preschool and School-Age Language Disorders
Language skills begin developing at birth. By the time children are 18-24 months of age, they should understand concepts and use words to communicate. With today''''s emphasis on preschool learning, the ability to understand and use language has become more important for the young child. Speech and language therapy is appropriate for children when speech or language delays are first noticed. Treatment will assist in developing understanding of language concepts and improving speech sound production for intelligible communication. Symptoms of language delay may include:
Lack of speech
Unintelligible speech
Missing or mispronounced sounds
Poor understanding of words or concepts
Inability to follow directions
Frustration from inability to communicate
Stuttering
