Auditory Processing Disorders
 
When children have difficulty understanding and using language, auditory processing problems may be present. These difficulties may include short-term auditory memory deficits and problems with organization, storage, and retrieval and vocabulary. Through therapy, children learn to access vocabulary for learning and conversation and enhance academic success and social interaction. Symptoms of auditory processing difficulties may include problems with:
 
  • Attending to and listening to verbal information
  • Discriminating between similar sounds and words, such that phonic skills are impeded
  • Following verbal directions
  • Sequencing the steps of both everyday and academic tasks
  • Interacting with peers
  • Explaining ideas or concepts
